Australian projects dominate shortlist at the World Architecture Festival
2015-06-29Of the 48 countries up for awards, Australia is the most heavily represented country with 42 projects shortlisted, followed by Britain (27) and Turkey (19).
Australia has performed particularly well in the Best Completed House category, with five homes shortlisted.

Andrew Maynard's 'Tower House' in Alphington, Melbourne, is a collection of five independent structures that are internally linked to form one home.
The apex cubes, one of which is 8.3 metres high, are adorned by wooden shingles. Ridged metal wraps around the sides and over the roof.

The buildings contain living and dining areas, an office and a kids' retreat equipped with elevated net flooring.
Shane Thompson Architects' Davenport Wilson House in Brisbane is already an award winner, having picked up a prize at the Brisbane Regional Architecture Awards in May this year.

Australian projects also dominated the Higher Education category, making up eight of the 17 shortlisted projects.
One of the more striking buildings is the new University of Technology building on Sydney's Broadway.
The distinctive dotted facade of the building is actually binary code that spells out its name: 'University of Technology Sydney Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology'.
The building self-generates 20 per cent of its own energy and has a five-star Green Star Certified Design rating.
The Charles Perkins Centre at University of Sydney made the list, as did the University of Western Sydney's John Phillips Library.
Five Australian buildings were shortlisted in the Health category.
Melbourne architecture firm Denton Corker Marshall is shortlisted in the Culture category for its Australian Pavilion showcased at the Venice Biennale.
After the category winners are announced at the festival in November, they will need to re-present to the super-jury for the World Building of the Year title.
